ABOUT R.A.T.S.

The Ryder’s Alley Trencher-fed Society (R.A.T.S.) is an eclectic group of residents of New York and New Jersey, bound together only by their devotion to terriers and other breeds of dog that were originally bred to seek and destroy vermin. Most of the two-legged members hold white-collar jobs by day and take to the alleys and garbage heaps only by night. Four legged members include a terrier mix, Border Terriers, Norfolk Terriers and Dachshunds, as each breed was developed to be specialized in rat catching. Most of the dogs have day jobs as well, being show champions, agility competitors or loyal house pets. But late at night, both man and canine become rat catchers.

Urban Earthdog Semiar

When: June 21st, 2008 – 10am to 2pm Sign Up Today!

You may wonder why there is a Rat on this page. The rat is there because a special seminar will be offered again this year, especially for Terrier and Dachshund breeds called Intro. To Earthdog!
The intro. includes a presentation by the president of the Palisades Kennel Club, A.K.C. show judge and member of the American Working Terrier Association, New Jersey Beanfield Earthdogs and the Ryder’s Alley Trencher-Fed Society (RATS) founder Richard Reynolds.

Earthdog fun will allow your dog to explore his or her natural instincts in a controlled setting.

Earthdogs will negotiate a man-made tunnel that simulates the natural home of vermin such as gophers, rats, woodchuck, etc. At the end of the run is (safely secured in a cage And behind 1″ bars) a real live rat!

If all goes as planned, after the dog is released the dog will find the entrance to “the earth” and make way to the end of the tunnel to bark at the rat for a set time period. The handler will then be signaled to lift the lid and remove his or her dog from the tunnel.

As the dog becomes better at “hunting” the course gets larger and more challenging. At the Master level, the dog must follow a “planted” scent trail (simulating real hunting) in a large field to get to the man made tunnel set up and find the rat at the end!

The sport of Earthdog is one in which teams can earn titles, ribbons and awards. Mixed Terrier and Dachshunds are eligible too!

Please call to be put on wait list 201-863-5624 or use the form.

CPAW Rescue

Why Cornerstone?
Because that is what our dogs and cats have become. Much like the stone at the corner of a building uniting two intersecting walls, our dogs and cats have become the Cornerstone of our families and our lives. No matter what goes down, the Cornerstone remains. Pets are indispensable and fundamental to our lives. Gandhi said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Treat them well.

We know cats and dogs. We are a resource for dog and cat owners. We don’t know it all, but we love learning. Pets are always welcome in the store. We have a little withdrawal problem if we haven’t had enough animal companionship on any given day.

We have been fostering and adopting out dogs and cats since the store opened. It was not part of the original plan, but the animals came one by one and there was nowhere to send them. It has been a wonderful experience working with the community to see companion animals enter into relationships with their new families.

CAP, Companion Animal Placement, is a local rescue group in Hoboken. They have been a tremendous help and a wealth of information in getting us involved in animal rescue. LHS, the Liberty Humane Society runs a shelter in Jersey City with which we work very closely. Their board members and staff are a wonderful resource and we in turn take animals that need exposure in our store. In the end, we have yet to have a cat or dog that has not found a home.

If you are interested in adopting, we are always looking for homes. If you want to sponsor or foster a cat or dog until they become someone’s companion for life through adoption, please call the store at 201-653-4644.

WE NEED MONEY. What a surprise. It takes a lot of resources, time and money, to work in animal rescue. Please donate. Every little bit helps and will offset our expenses. In the end, nothing is free and someone has to pay. You can donate through this website by clicking on the DONATE icon below.

Thank you!

Canine Modeling Seminars

Special seminars will be held for dogs and their people who are interested in submission for canine modeling jobs. Dates TBA, Sign Up Now To Get On The List!

This seminar will help you to figure out what you need to work on, if anything, prior to your dog’s photo submissions for a job.

Photos will be taken of your dog (headshot, profiles and a pose/trick) and kept on file.

Dogs who are ready for a job will be added to my file of dog models and, if suited to the needs of the client, will be submitted for consideration as frequently as possible.

No time to be a “stage mom” or “stage dad”? You’re not alone, but it doesn’t mean your dog can’t take jobs. I will not only get your dog the job whenever possible, I’ll take your dog to the shoot, get the job done and return with your dog for pick up at your convenience later that day. And a few weeks later, you can expect a check, so your dog can help to pay for the dog food and some new toys!

My dogs have appeared on television and in magazines and newspapers, working in fashion, interior design sets, commercials and other advertising. And your dog could too!

Topics covered will include:
  • Basic Needs/Obedience Must Haves
  • Before The Job–what to do, what to have on hand
  • On Location–the sights and sounds
  • On Location–How to keep your dog interested and focused
  • After the job–seeing your dog in print or on television.

So, if you think your dog has the looks and talent to model, sign up for this seminar today! Space is limited.

For more information call 201-863-5624 or use the form to contact me.
